Their age gap informs their pairing and what Kycellia tries to offer her. In a lot of ways, Kycellia's misjudgement of Nyaan's wants (a scholarship, "true freedom") mirrors the way that Machu's mom misjudged her desires. Both try to impose their values, their idea of their daughter should want.

Nyaan is a character who is pretty plain in what she wants: she wants power, but most safety and romantic affirmation. Each time Kycellia tries to impose her value on her, she rejects it internally, just like Machu did to her mom.

But the thing is that Nyaan actually values Kycellia and I think in an overtly romantic sense. Just a few episodes she explains how she would want to feed her person, and upon Kycellia's death, she remarks remorsefully how she wishes she could have fed Kycellia cooking.

But from Nyaan's perspective, her sense of having a true relationship with Kycellia is frustrated specifically by this maternal purpose. She wanted Kycellia to want her as her, as lover rather than a child or Kycellia ultimately describes her: a dog she tamed.
