I think a lot of vtuber struggle with finding a niche and end up playing the same games like everyone else. Which makes small/beginner vtubers hard to find. So that might be worth covering. Or people not sticking to their niche content wise and then be chook they lose viewers (fe. cosy gamer -

How do I get help with my design without relinquishing artistic control over the design/model? I feel like most artists don't get copyright law enough to understand why I would want to negotiate terms, and that would probably scare them off.

If somebody designs a character for you, you have to credit them for the design work. The character is yours, though. So if you want to avoid that, you need to put together a design yourself cc

However, the right to the art itself will always belong to the artist. That is called intellectual property. Artists can sell you that right, but almost none will. That's because the art came out of their hand and their pen.

Depending on what exactly you want, most artists will be down to negotiate, tho, often even without paying more. It all depends on the artist, really. The only way to fully avoid that would be to do your own art and design.

My concern is that many of the artists I talk to don't know IP well enough to know what they're negotiating over. Like, most vtubers assume they have an exclusive transferable right to create derivative works, but I've never once seen that mentioned in any terms.

Usually when artists post a model they say "character belongs to X" so I believe it's assumed that right to produce derivative works is a given. I think that, as long as nothing contrary is stated, that usually holds to be true. After all, you also get commercial rights for the model.
