Secrets historians don’t want people to know: Our idea of ancient history has way more to do with which parts of the world have climates that support papyrus/parchment/woodblock/etc. preservation than anyone is willing to admit.

True to an extent, but even places that don't preserve such things still preserve stonework and other monumental structures, so while there's certainly a lot of detail we don't know it's hard to hide the existence of cities.
It's depressing how much history is basically the drunk looking for his keys under the street light.
(I remember learning that in Mesoamerican history there is a *lot* of looking at a mound of rotting biomass and people saying that yep, that was definitely a codex at one time.)
