This will likely be in agriculture areas and not cities like Ottawa, trying to detect H5N1 levels on farms from animals not city level surveillance for humans.

Yep, the article said it would be in agricultural areas, but I wouldn't be surprised if a mutation brings the jump for human-to-human transmission & then we'll need this testing for urban areas. That's so frightening.

The thing is viruses spread at exponential rates so by the time there is enough data and evidence to show the need for funding urban surveillance as an early warning system it will likely already be too late. :-(

So - what can I do to decrease spread with my students? CO2 is being monitored, masking encouraged and there’s a ventilator in the classroom. More hand washing and outdoor time … or … it’s already happened.

When you say ventilator are you talking about a device that brings in outdoor air into the classroom? That should help some dilution of pathogens in the air. One thing would be to use air cleaners (e.g. CR box, HEPA) to filter out pathogens in addition to what you are already doing. 1/

I am seeing reports that a lot more farm workers are believed to have caught avian flu than is being reported (presumably not being tested). Does this mean it's less deadly than we originally thought?

I'm not an expert, but from what I've read, H5N1 is a type of virus that can easily & quickly mutate. So far, infections in humans haven't been severe. The big risk is if we get a flavour of it that can do human-to-human transmission.
I don't believe governments are prepared for this.
