The condition of fabrics from pile dwelling and wetland settlements is amazing. This charred ball of thread was found at the site of Marin-Epagnier/Préfargier. It seems like a solvable math problem. You can calculate the volume of the sphere from the circumference and you can measure the thickness of the thread and weigh the ball. That might be enough data to give a decent estimate of the length
