I didn't know that. They look weirdly naked without their garnets. So do you think gold craftsmen were making these then passing them onto other people to do the garnet work?Presumably they didn't know they would end up garnet-less when they made them? Or was it fashionable not to have the garnets?

Yes. Shaping the thin slices or garnet for the mount may have been a job for a specialist.

Bespoke diamond rings are still made by two craftspeople. One makes the mount, the other sets the stone.

I wonder if there are known examples from that time, where the garnet was replaced with some other semi-precious stone (or red glass) ? The empty cell pattern certainly has its own aesthetics and makes the entire piece brighter, so I could well imagine a generational fashion trend towards it
