Rhyme's Reason, by John Hollander, is an excellent primer on verse forms, rhythms, free verse etc. I'd also recommend Poetic Form and Meter, by Paul Fussell - really good on how to understand rhythm and genre. And read lots and lots and lots of poetry of every kind!

Read, read and, more importantly, listen to poetry recited, whether that be the poets themselves, or someone else interpreting their work, whether the poets be canonical or contemporary.

Start experimenting yourself with micro forms, such as haiku and tanka, as these will teach you concision.

Being Native American, I have always thought of poetry as the living, breathing, & yes, the static, dormant, & dead things around us. We are constantly interacting with poetry, imho. A formal education in poetry demonstrates the various voices.

I think you are on the right track. Personally, I think one of the best ways to learn to write poetry is by reading, lots of it, see what other writers are doing, and what touches you. And then writing lots of it, trying to go beyond what you have read, and bend all the patterns you have observed. 🤷‍♂️

Oh, and go live. Fall in love. Have your heart broken. Stand in nature. Work a mundane job. And then try to capture the emotions of those experiences with the magic that is yours– words.

Seconding what @bocassell.bsky.social said above. Read, read, read. Read poems in styles you think you won't like. Give yourself permission to write some lousy poems. Billy Collins once said everyone has at least 200 bad poems in them that they have to get out of their system. Oh, and read.

You could join the Stafford Challenge. There are poets with a variety of experience from beginner to professors and everything in between.
