I can't condone the act, but one would have to be a fool to see it's nothing but self-defense. Of course I would prefer an attacker to be captured without anyone being hurt, but that isn't always possible. When greed becomes a sword in the neck of many, retaliation is a matter of time.
Boots as measure of economic success, Pratchett's satire is up there with the skill of Mel Brooks. But the Britt used his satire to be as sharp as a sword.
And then Moist is - as he should be - haunted and horrified by the thought that his actions could have lead to deaths, even "just" 2.338 people. I doubt there's a megacorp CEO on the planet who would blink at the thought of their being responsible for a hundred thousand times as many deaths.
I want to say don't hate the player, hate the game, but the game itself is created by the player. As much as government overreach is considered a dirty word to some, the only way to stop businesses from robbing the populace blind because it's the economic principle to do so, is government control.
