Good read JD. For what it’s worth I would prefer the #Habs move Newhook to 3rd line centre permanently. With more ice time there he could improve his faceoff percentage. Centre line would be Suzuki, Dach, Newhook and Beck with Kapanan as a possible backup it they move on from Evans and Dvorak.

The issue is neither Newhook nor Dach can win faceoffs if their life depends on it. @rwtrask.bsky.social wrote a post about it here yesterday. You need a lefty who can win you some faceoffs.

Yeah, about that... while I agree that getting tips can help, I remember the days of Guy Carbonneau (who was even better than Bureau on faceoffs) coaching in Montreal and they were one of the worst teams in that category. I think it's also very instinctive: you have it or you don't.

Ok. So Suzuki’s % is 50.35, Newhook’s is 42.55. So if Bureau can improve Newhook’s numbers by 4-5% points more then he’s only 3% less efficient than Suzuki. Give him the reps by being there full time and Bureau giving him a hand and that’s not a lot of difference between the two.

different now. Good old days linesmen skated up and dropped the puck. Now there are 30 rules and 2 violations are a penalty and then the linesmen want their 15 minutes of fame on the camera. Still they should be working on them as its an important part of puck possession. Wingers have role too

The same can be said for every category. The game has evolved, some for the best, some not. But we're comparing apples to apples in the sense that it was against their peers at a given time. The point being that having faceoffs coach is far from a guarantee for success today.

Crosby was 45.5% in his rookie year at 18, and 49.8 as a 19 year old. I wouldn't compare that, personally.

My argument against is the same as against keeping the FA's: Next year is not a contending year. Its a make the playoff year. So we need some more youth up next year (Demidov, Beck, Logan, to start) for an experience year, as year 2 will begin contending status and adding Reinbacher/Fowler. IMHO

This is not a terrible idea. I think they need a right D for at least a season. Schenn would be a capable place holder and bring some sandpaper. Brayden at C is an even more interesting option. If the price is right...

Resigning Savard is a viable option, but only for a year. They would probably cost the same. But bringing Luke may be a key to getting Brayden. And I think Luke probably has a little more impact than Savard at this point. But not opposed to re-upping with Savard for a year.

He's better than Dvorak... And better than Dach. He would serve as a placeholder. We don't "need" him and if the plan is to acquire a younger legit 2C, then obviously that's the way to go. But this isn't a bad idea to get us through next season as a plan B.

I don't see it as a buyer move, in the terms of "going for it" as much as a "time-buying move", to allow prospects to properly develop while remaining competitive (benefit of being 'in the mix') with veteran presence for the youth...
