https://vortaro.net is good to find example sentences - and often running the definitions through Google Translate will help. Beyond that, avoid using Google Translate.

You'd probably find that Duolingo makes more sense if you first go through something like https://esperanto12.net

I think simple is better. Till FEC is back on line, I've been pointing people to https://esperanto12.net . You can talk to people anywhere. I mean, I reached out to you here in Esperanto. Have a look over my posts and see what you can read of the ones in EO and if you have anything for a reply.
