Strongly agree. It's simply impossible to read, take notes, and then write about thousands of different articles and books for your monograph without inadvertently repeating a line or two here and there, often because you paraphrased it at first, and then months or years later rewrote the sentence.

I remember when they did the same thing to Ward Churchill after he criticized the US response to 9/11. Not surprising that we'd use it again, when it worked so well that time. (With perhaps better grounds then, but same procedure.)

And as anyone who has ever tried to track down a bunch of facts or sources using footnotes knows, they are never perfect, and often fall far short of perfect, without the main message of the book being undermined.

Exactly. Or you read something, it really resonates, and you internalize both the idea (usually but not always consciously) *and* the phrasing (almost always unconsciously), and then months or even years later, you repeat a version of it. I don't know what that is, but it's clearly not plagiarism.
