I tried to give it an honest go, but caved and disabled it. I was surprised how jarring of a change it was. Glancing down to check the time immediately took me out of any flow I was in.

I legit thought my GPU driver needed to be reset or something. Then I go digging in options and see this option and it's enabled!

I do wonder how shell thought that was a good idea, but they live in a different dimension so the answer wouldn't make sense anyway.
