There were only a few months of full remote learning- kids had been in classes for more than 6mths. 3ish months supposedly destroyed everything?

Perhaps it’s because they live in a society where people disrespect each other all the time, and value capital over children’s well-being. Perhaps being thrown into situations with run-down buildings, not enough support and adults failing in their duty of care makes them feel it’s all bullshit.

My kid is quite respectful. Us endeavouring to treat her with respect and consistently do the same to others may help. If I were a kid in these times, I’d feel pretty disrespected a lot too.

And fwiw, I know a lot of kids who have homeschooled or been online since the pandemic started because their families decided that in-person was not aligned with their duty to keep their kids healthy. They are 100% not rude nor more rude than kids who do school in-person.

I don’t want to paint everything with too wide brush but parents and parenting has changed a great deal in these last 5 years. And whether it’s being to detached or too attached or really any kind of polarity, kids are coming to school different home perspectives

When I was raising my daughter, people always commented on her impeccable manners. Because she was taught what I was taught and that included respect your elders which meant saying please, thank you, excuse me, etc. She's now instilling the same values in her own child.

We have lots of convos about mutual respect and why it’s good to extend grace to others when you can. And we do a lot of apologizing when we haven’t been respectful to her because modeling humility is important. We also talk about how to protect ourselves from others who are disrespectful

Anecdotally, we're seeing a huge increase in problems in the classroom in our school. First place I'd point the finger is the fact that lots of folks are under huge financial stress. Coupled with a hugely under resourced system and it's a bit of a mess.

I taught in 2020 and my students were fine. Blaming current behaviour problems on home learning seems too simple. Multiple Covid infections and missing time are likely more responsible.

I am- or rather, was- a teacher. The years of being in school immediately following shut down took a massive toll on my physical/mental health. Schools are still using pandemic as an excuse for why kids *can’t* learn. And we were teaching remotely. Trying, that is 😞
