You did ask Matt to give up control and he said no. Then you asked him if you could be the next release lead instead of him(?).

I know you didn't technically ask for a fork, but from the outside it's very hard to understand what you're actually proposing should happen next or what the strategy is.

Oh I think their ideas are pretty solid. I just don’t see know what the strategy is now that Matt has repeatedly said no.

Hat tip to Matt for declaring it a fork and thereby putting you on the outside. Good strategy, given his desire for less internal dissent. But at this point, I actually think he’s right that what people are seeking requires a fork. (Or possibly a fresh start with something along the lines of Astro.

He’s only right if there’s no way to convince him to cooperate. The best outcome all round would be for him to start listening and cooperate.

I’m not saying that’s realistic, but it would be the best thing for WordPress.

I completely agree. I think he’s been wrong to turn his legit concerns about contributions into a ‘with me or unwelcome’ division of the community, but personally I find a great deal to admire about him. He seems pretty well dug in, though.
