Martin Niemöller was a Lutheran pastor in Germany. His dismay at the Social Democrats’ and Communists’ embrace of atheism caused him to support Hitler in the beginning. But he soon saw through Hitler’s façade and, from 1937 to 1945, he was imprisoned for his opposition to the Third Reich.
