I remember when 9/11 was happening 2 USAF fighters were scrambled , they had no weapons loaded and after the planes hit the WTC the plan was if need be they would ram any other airliner they thought was going to do similar.

Luckily for the pilots they didnt need to do that

To be fair, it might have been possible to ram with minimal damage (hit the rear stabiliser) and eject if need be.

Afaik, the standard operating procedure is to not inform anyone on the plane that they are being followed (it was in an interview with a uk typhoon pilot).
