Yes, it's a playful feminist response to the classic gaucho epic poem "Martín Fierro" (1872).

Very (very) much worth reading before the novel.

An odd business here. I have read the 1967 and 1974 SUNY Press translations, both by roughly the same translators, but completely different. 1967 is more plain and scholarly; 1974 is translated into cowboy poetry:

A 2nd post follows that one. I prefer the creative cowboy version but boy will tastes vary on that.

It's a short "epic" so reading 2 versions was not a big deal.
