And there may have been parallel invention for other users of the name as compound names were a thing at the time and it's not outside the bounds of imagination that someone would compromise, say, Beatrice and Leah with Leatrice.

In more recent researches, the suggestion that seemed most recurrent to me was a variation of the name Beatrice. I was testing (inspired by your post) and really the letter that sounds best (I'm biased here) is L. 😊 Both theories seem plausible to me.
In the late 90s and early 2000s, I remember researching the name on websites about the origin of the names, and in the few that mentioned Leatrice, some suggested this possibility.
