THE HAUNTED HOTEL (1907) was a playful special effects fest using every form of animation available to filmmakers at the time. Stop-motion, miniatures, puppetry, wires, magnets and more, it showcased every trick in Vitagraph's arsenal.

As was typical for horror of this era, there was a generous dose of humor and playfulness alongside the scary images. Deadly serious horror came later.
English language coverage of Méliès' 1896 horror film THE HAUNTED CASTLE praised it for using humor in its approach rather than mimicking the terrors of the stage. It seems that Méliès very much set the tone for movie horror for the following decades.
