Reminds me of people talking to me about ancient Greeks being all superior and philosophical and totally not crass, and then I have to show them all the dicks they've drawn in walls to advertise how good they were at boning chicks (and possibly guys).
Watching the Big Sleep after reading the novel is a fun exercise. The book's full of taboo sexuality, which the film mostly retains, but only as implication. A lot of it flies over the head of the average modern viewer, which is why the plot feels so confusing.
I've been playing jugband music for about 7 years now, there is nothing on the radio as dirty as music from the 1920s. There is stuff that is less subtle, but nothing is innocent!
