I don't understand this. Most FF is written off of protected IPs. If this company is charging people money off of other company IPs (w/out agreement/compensation) they could be facing THOUSANDS of lawsuits from very powerful IP owners.

Fan Fiction is considered fair use so it's a grey area.

But this is direct infringement. They did not get permission to sell a recording of the copyrighted work.

That's what I am saying. I can write a FF about Star Trek but I am not profiting. If they sell ANYTHING from a licensed IP without permission, regardless of how they attained it, and profit from it, it's direct infringement of the IP holder.

In the Reddit post, OP mentioned we have been informed, most likely through our Policy & Abuse form. When users' works end up on other sites, AO3 does not own the rights to those works, so it's up to the users/authors to send takedown notices themselves.

Since this stuff can only be stopped by DMCA takedowns, and takedowns have to come from the authors, authors need to be made aware of this *every time* some startup shithead thinks he found a goldmine of "free" content to exploit.

Furthermore, OTW lawyers could send a "friendly" letter to this company, informing them that they are infringing many, many authors' copyrights, and the OTW will be notifying its users that they should check if their work is on the app, and telling them how to file a DMCA takedown.

The site went down for a bit, and now it's back up with the entire Fanfiction category removed. I searched for a fic that I knew was on there earlier and it's gone, too, so it's not just that they removed the category from the menu. So far all I see now are public domain works. Good!

Jep, I also think they just take what they can get, no matter the content. Quantity over quality. The most effective way is to get some sort of automatism behind the actual scrapping process and that only works if the data is publicly available without paywall, log in or password.
