I’ve come to think that one of the most defining and positive characteristics of a person is curiosity and one of the worst is fear. You had curiosity and wanted to understand why things were the way they were. Authoritarian leaning types are not curious - they are fearful so they seek control.

I didn’t said you could have an educated conversation with everyone, but there’s no reason two rational people with opposing views shouldn’t be able to have a discussion. Nowadays it seems it’s more about winning an argument than it is about educating.

And I wouldn’t try to have an educated discussion with the type of person you are referring to. It’s the story of The Tiger and The Donkey. The biggest waste of time is arguing with the fool and fanatic who doesn’t care about truth or reality, but only the victory of his beliefs and illusions.

Ronald Reagan concocted his mythical "welfare queen" to justify cutting welfare and giving the money to extremely wealthy people. I don't know any conservatives who condemn Reagan for this and other lies perpetuated by Reagan. So where are the conservatives who care about truth or reality.

Conservatives only view the short term effects of Reaganomics and ignore the bad long term effects it had. His trickle down effect worked for the US only because of where the US was at the time. It brought the US into a boom, but it also ballooned the budget and continues widening the wealth gap.
