After the publication of the novel, "The Ugly American" in 1958, and the 1963 film adaptation starring Marlon Brando, term ugly American became a commonly used idom around the world in the 60's & 70's. The sentiment is now being revived, but shortened to the hashtag #Ugligarchy.
