"Helene is responsible for at least 248 fatalities in the United States (including at least 175 direct deaths), making it the
deadliest hurricane in the contiguous U.S. since Katrina in 2005." - NHC #NCwx
Helene lead to 34 flash flood emergencies (FFEs). A quick filter on IEM database got me at 752 FFEs dating back to 2003. Doing the math... Helene is now responsible for almost 5% of all FFEs ever issued by NWS. #NCwx
Really underscoring that deaths from tree falls was an underreported impact of Helene. It's why I had my parents, my brother, and I cut our trees down around our houses after the storm. #NCwx
High elevation weather stations of WNC reported widespread 90-105 mph wind gusts on mountain peaks, with Mt. Mitchell leading the way at 106 mph. NHC didn't note this, but it is likely that wind gusts were even higher in certain valleys via terrain funneling. #NCwx
