The central point is that these are clever people. They know better and yet they're deliberately saying stupid things they know to be untrue as a populist posture that will cause immense real damage. That's worse than not knowing any better, like the Tories.

I think you're right. They've decided the most voters are reactionary, paranoid and bitter, and intend to appeal to them. Just like Blair in the 90s.
