The book series I have read the most of is Donna Leon’s Commissario Brunetti books - a policeman in Venice but so much more. Quality may vary with so many books but at their best they are both excellent police procedurals but also (and especially) trenchant, humorous observations on modern Italy.

Unlike some series, the first one is really good and sets the tone perfectly. If you enjoy it you’ll probably enjoy the series. If it’s not your cup of tea you don’t need to read 3 or 4 to see if it develops to your taste.
