Citizens united, gerrymandering, lack of Congressional term limits, and the end of the fairness doctrine have sent us down the steep descent we are seeing today.

Fairness doctrine was largely obsolete by then and it was often abused by the administrations as a tool of censorship.

However I would also include the lack of re-apportionment as well to gerrymandering as a voter disenfranchisement tactic.

I assume “way back” includes much of the 19th century.

The Sherman Act and the 17A were also prior steps in the battle against corporate interests so there is hope CU and its impacts can be defeated.
