Mitchell, one of the most extraordinary novelists of my lifetime, has struggled with a stammer. He wrote a novel about his childhood with one, Black Swan Green. The protagonist collects synonyms to avoid words his stammer gets stuck on… Would he be the same writer without that formative experience?

I’m sure part of my need to communicate is rooted with an immigrant mother who struggled with English as a 2nd language. It made me need to write & make connections in the gaps as much as discovering fiction.

Can’t speak for Mitchell, but for me, AI would’ve erased this essential imperfection…

I believe storytelling is not just the data of plot. It’s weaving a narrative of connections around, under, over, across, even to the imagination of the audience, in an attempt to make sense of messy existence. “AI” art cannot do this. It can only drool globs of stolen info, without the connections.

The thing I don’t see the most in AI generated imagery is how it lacks ~any~ storytelling. It’s all just references. The ultimate Family Guy filter. George Miller had the prop, costume & car builders to come up with full backstories for every object in Fury Road. You don’t know it, but you feel it.

So when I see literally the world’s leaders touting AI is going to make children more creative, I get furious. Equal income, access to food & water & healthcare, open borders & the inevitable assignation of imperfection & struggles in our lives, only those will make for a more creative generation.

"Use of AI" is not a binary. Most arguments treat AI's creative use as either "all AI" or "all organic." It's not like that... or it shouldn't be.

Midjourney helps spark ideas to build from. I've played classical piano since 5, and I *love* using Suno to tease out ideas.

It's a tool.

They are clearly lying. They don’t want AI to make children creative. They want it to keep poor children less educated, with less access to accurate information, to make them more docile, and to grow up to become an even less empowered work force. Then if we get ill, they want us to die.

If they keep touting AI loudly enough, they might drown out concern about a real problem, climate change, that they should be working feverishly against. AI & its energy sucking data centers may well guarantee a miserably hot, polluted future for all living things. AI's not alive so it'll be fine.

My favorite example of this is from Lord of the Rings. Bernard Hill's Theoden armor had the symbols of Rohan on the inside of the armor where the audience would never see it, but Hill would always know it was there and give a performance influenced by that.

AI will not erase the human quality of our experiences. There will always be struggles.Maybe a particular struggle one experienced won’t exist in the same iteration,but others will evolve.

Until quantum computers are more advanced.Then they will be our overlords.
