A bad article that doesn't really discuss the causes of increased coal consumption and degenerates into nonsense about "coal fueling the energy transition"
Your thread on X was very good, and it's always a pleasure to see these trends handled in the right proportions.
Just a side comment: if you tell me that the only way to produce PV is through coal-fired electricity supply, I will take that trade. Won't be happy about it. But it pencils out.
It's certainly not the only way to make PV. I think I mentioned this either in the piece or the thread over there but many plants are using renewables, esp hydro. No reason why you couldn't use gas or nuclear. If you read my book you'll see Nippon makes boules with hydro in WA
The IEA update is really sobering, but does any of it mean governments and businesses should be doing anything differently. Isn’t it just yet more evidence they need to try and advance the transition faster still so as to ensure the coal demand curve does start to bend?
That, and it arguably means there should be considerably more focus on climate resilience, given how difficult it’ll be to keep temperature increases below 2C.

That is indeed an encouraging chart
I’m very impressed!

We do still have some carbon budget - not a lot - but using it to make solar is arguably the best possible use of it.
