It actually was. Without internal resistance, many more would have died. Without the French Resistance, the US never could have made the gains it did.

The better analogy is not Germany at all because of the war, but Spain anyway which unfortunately lived under fascist rule for 35 years.
You assume that the US will be left alone, as does Trump. That's the type of American exceptionlism that led to the "it can't happen here" folly in the first place.
There may or may not be a for ever war going on as well.
It's an erroneous assumption.
