Do you use AI translation to let students read materials that would otherwise be inaccessible (or too difficult)—if so, do you discuss the ethics of doing this (labor, inadequacy of translation, env costs, etc.) and how?

Excellent question I want more discussion on. I have not done so personally, but I’ve had student “presentations” use source material attributed to AI translations and, well… those were pertinent texts.
Exactly this. I know of colleagues in a “rarely taught” (in every sense) language who assign extremely sophisticated projects that routinely require AI translation use. On the one hand, amazing—the language gets more spotlight, students don’t suffer from tied tongue. On the other hand—a morass!
Right, we were doing some 1920s newspapers popular receptions of some work or other-- this will never ever get translated (nor should it) etc, but provides necessary context, if one goes beyond most superficial level...
Exactly, it’s the combo of “this will never get translated” and “our students will never take enough language to read the original because the odds at Anglo STEM Unis are stacked against it”
