I hope the next pandemic is managed better: put the teachers and some students needing volunteer credits on contract tracing. Use public broadcasting for school curriculums. Teach some hygiene, money management, fact-checking on public broadcasting with rewards for passing tests on it.

Actually I watch PBS a lot. There’s a lot of great history, music, science programs, etc. I have clients who have no money & PBS is the only channel they can get.

Exactly. That's the point I was trying to make. I don't know about Aus but here, it's all abt *believing* in Climate Change, rarely abt understanding it. Here in Massachusetts we have a Climate Czar who raises pigs a few towns away. I asked her to get the state to TEACH it, she doubted it'd happen.

You totally missed my point, though to be fair, I had limited space to make it. I used to teach recycling to kids in schools when I worked at a recycling center, they taught the parents, & then the 10k pop district made 1/4 million$/yr in just recycling. I was suggesting doing similar w Climate Sci.

PBS is just one way to do that. When I was in school, b4 PBS existed, the local "Educational TV" stations, like WGBH, did exactly that in the mornings. My teachers wd even show these programs, mostly practical science demonstrations as I remember them, to us in the classroom as they were broadcast.

great, good to know that kids, at least, are learning the science... While so much of the media is still asking adults if they "believe in" Climate Change. We have a "Climate Czar" here in Mass, and I asked her about teaching it as a science to adults and she doubted that it would ever happen.

When PBS started it was called Educational TV, and there was a lot of science. I remember seeing those science programs in Elementary school. Now the local schools can't even find science teachers, and when they do, they get 435 students (middle schoolers in the case I know most about) at a time.

When I was in NH I taught young kids how to recycle. The local recycling center had ~65 categories, but kids knew how to do it, we made 1/4 million last year I was there. 10k pop. Here in Mass "no time for that,we have 2 teach MCAS test" so recycling a joke. So I'd teach climate science to youngest.

yup, tho my son applied for a job teaching civics in our W Mass town. He didn't get it, instead they gave him a job teaching subjects he was really weak in, so I can't give the specifics of what Civics here covers. What I remember abt Civics mostly is that the teacher had dated the Bewitched actress

We don't even get PBS here and it shows! Kindergarten requirements are that kids know colors, shapes, alphabet, count 1-10, plus write their name. Last time I taught or volunteered, less than half of the children could complete the list. Fund our public schools 💙💙
