Thomas Pennant describes how, in spring and fall each year, the farmers of the Isle of Arran gathered for a medical bloodletting by the Duke of Hamilton's surgeon:

"[they] extend their arms; and are bled into a hole made in the ground, the common receptacle of the vital fluid"
