We’ve asked some festival favourites and hope-makers to respond to our theme for this year: Hope in the Making. Here’s what writer, rapper and record-breaking human beatboxer Testament had to say: a poem – full of hope – just for you.

Hope
Uncomfortably
Often something we have to make
Ourselves
In the absence
Of genuine paths of escape
Paths forward
We have to assemble it
Ourselves.
Finding hope
In the cuts and cracks
Down the sides of sofa.
The scent of it
Provoking remembrances
Of why
Why we started in the first place
Of who we care for
And of often
Realising the tools
We have
In our very hands.
We are alive.
We have things to be thankful for.
That’s a start.
We can begin to build out from.
To connect to others’ small embers of hope.
Now
The fact we are here may suggest perhaps
If we nurture it
Grow into faith in the wide possibilities
Of hope
It is moving.
If we listen
Closely
The stones
Begin to move.
A song is still
Being sung.
Are we going
To join in.
There is something comforting about the
Sotto voce.

Of hope
That I was taught once,
That can start as a small
As a mustard seed
And yet
Will tell that
Beguiling
Impassable
Mountain
to MOVE.
If we listen
Closely
The stones
Begin to move.

Hope is in the listening.
