I haven't encountered the "I hate Chrono Trigger" folks yet but my honest opinion is that Final Fantasy VI better, even though people these days will say it's Chrono Trigger. Both games excel at so much, but FFVI's grandiosity sticks with me more...

And as cool as CT's double and triple techs are, FFVI's use of its massive cast is so impressive. It's more than just giving each character a fleshed out story: it's the narrative branching and the use of multiple parties at the same time, compelling you to not shelve too many members so quickly.

I have never been able to finish a DQ game and have played all of them going back to NES. they fall into this weird category where the grind is addicting and the music hits just right for about 20 hours then tedium settles in and I move on. Chrono Trigger on the other hand is a masterpiece 👍

I played CT on release, almost a year after having played FFVI.

I did not get its appeal then.

In the intervening years, I’ve loved every DQ game I’ve tried, but every time I revisit CT, I keep wishing I was playing Seiken Densetsu 3 or FFV. I just cannot figure out how to enjoy the damn game.

I’ve played it on the SNES. I’ve played it on the DS. I’ve played it in Japanese. Each and every time, I walk away from it going “this game is okay, but I feel nothing for any of these people but Frog and Robo.” What am I doing wrong? D:

I dunno... I first saw the game in a magazine article talking about the PS1 port, and I was entranced by the screenshots and the time-travel concept. I first played it in emulation a while later and loved it, then again on the DS, and more recently on my Analogue Pocket.

Chrono Trigger is a short and breezy JRPG, and the story is a rollicking adventure, where the tone shifts from light and fun to somber and heart-wrenching and many places in-between. I usually don't love ATB, but for some reason it works for me in CT. Without writing a whole essay, it's just great!
