Had an early 90's Ford Escort, the cupholders were just a couple 1.5" deep depressions ahead of the shifter (and mine didn't have the rubber insert). It was more useful to wedge a drink between the seat and handbrake than use them.

Oh, gosh. Yes. My husband had this exact car (I think it was a '91 and later, we had his dad's, an '89.) and I had entirely forgotten about this. We did the same thing with drinks!

Mine on an 06 SL 500 were terrible. Flimsy and right over the infotainment so couldn’t drink anything cold due to dripping condensation

This is the factory cup holder for the 986 Boxster. It's loose and folds into this neat little package. You unfold it and clip the 3 little pins into the dash vents. It holds a 12oz can and some small or medium fast food cups.
