Private prisons have been tried before and it incentivized throwing people in prison for profit and continued slavery even after it was "abolished". Anti-vagrancy laws were one way prisons were filled.

People who criminalize homelessness agree that we need to house homeless people, but also think they should be given three meals a day, and guards, and misery. This is preferable to setting people up to be productive members of society somehow.

I honestly don't care about "productive" I just want to make sure people have a palce to live and food to eat. If they're not productive, if they're never productive and won't can't manage it, I don't want them starving or dying of exposure.
