Gotta admit, even when I played it... 8 years ago (yeah, I'm surprised it was that long ago), it really was the gameplay aspects that kept me going in spite of how much I hated how bland the story was. While I'm glad Brothership was a better example of original ideas, PJ still has some good to it.

To be fair, they at least swapped in the ability to guarantee boost a stat on every level up with the rank up selection; so if you really wanted to, you could get 2-3 level up bonuses if you didn't want to grab some of the more static stuff.

Glad you ended up with such a positive opinion! I’d personally still BARELY rate it near the bottom of the series, but the combat is excellent & the various Toad-catching minigames genuinely aren’t too bad. It’s definitely a minimum 7 or 8 out of 10 game overall & deserves some more credit.

Paper Jam might be the weakest M&L game, but it was probably the best Paper Mario game in a while. Mostly because moving back to the RPG format brought back some of what Paper Mario used to be.

Exactly! The worst you can say about it is that it’s mid at best. Great gameplay and music, but bad story and writing. Being able to play the game is the most important thing, and this game you can play & sticker star you can’t. I think it’s a good time, but not the BEST time.
