Totally independently another NIH source told me today that if the rumored RIFs move ahead paired with assaults on university funding it would mean “the functional end of NIH and academic research in the US.”

Per a source (and similar post on Reddit, fwiw), NIH RIF plan may centralize and cut the number of institutes and centers by around half.
