A pleasnt fairytale, but EU product standards and many other rules would absolutely devastate U.S. - Canada trade.
Canada would have to ban a huge amount of U.S. trade across what would be a new Single Market border.
I agreee, but you don't get to choose your neighbors, you have to find a way to exist beside them. And distance IS a real thing in our universe. It can't be wished away, and it will always cost you more to eschew your nearest+biggest market.
FWIW: I'm a Brit. I support you in this utter shitscape
Thanks - Canada is not the UK though - most of what we export is oil, natural gas, timber, potash, nickel, steel, aluminium, gold, silver, copper, diamonds, titanium, lithium, rare earths etc - so shifting the direction trade flows is not a huge deal, we have no shortage of possible customers.
US trade would suffer for sure but thatβs fine. We are not far from Europe. Weβre just used to looking at the map in a North-South orientation- try turning that map sideways.
Doesnt something like 70% of your trade go across that one border?? That's one hell of a pivot. Far far bigger than the U.K.'s trade with the EU. Brexit has cost UK trillions, and will never recover until we reverse our madness.
Also, as BREXIT demonstrated, it is always idiocy to separate yourself from your nearest and biggest trading "partners"
(regardless of what utter pricks you find yourself next to)
I know. My 3 selling points would be 1) free universal Healthcare 2) strict gun laws 3) an election system that doesn't deal with electoral, politicians are beholding to their constituents and have political donation limits.

'America is more foreign to the UK than continental European neighbours not in terms of *distance* but in ideas, values, ideology'
Canada - if you want to race the UK to EU membership, let's go!
