Pottery friends, has anyone had an allergic reaction to clay? Was throwing with the same clay I’ve used for a year (112) and my hands turned bright red and I got an itchy hive-like rash on my wrists. It went away after about an hour. Not a new bag, and nothing different that I know of. - ThreadSky

Ouch! My reactions are usually from the cold, and clay dries out your skin something terrible but nothing like hives. A strain of mold that got into your clay perhaps?

I can’t see anything in it, but that’s entirely possible. My hands are always a mess, but usually not to that extreme!

Could be microscopic, or very similar color to the clay itself depending on the mold. I haven't tried it, but I've seen some potters wear nitrile gloves while throwing so that could help if it happens again and wasn't just a random weird thing?

No idea. 🤔 If my hands get too dry from all the clay I do get a bunch of itchy, hive-like red bumps on them but a really good dollop of hand cream usually solves it. I was using subpar lotion for a while and the bumps didn't go away as quickly, so it took a while to find something that worked.

I have a friend who believes she is allergic to clay. Her nose starts running anytime she’s working with it. 🙁
