When I was a wee child, it was an important safety fact that no one know I wasn't christain. I remember trying to explain that you can't technically prove to me that I'm mortal because I wouldn't be able to percieve being dead, and that outted me because "uuuh idiot St Peter is a giveaway"
Yes, but I what makes it worse the dumb are immune to the dumb and they outnumber us.
Haven’t you ever wondered why over thousands of years of written history, we don’t appear to be any smarter just more technologically advanced?
Where do they take the smart ones?
I started selecting my own books to read in 4th grade. They were nearly all science fiction. The nitwit nuns did not teach science. I used the books for words, ideas and information that I was not getting from school. Like why winter & summer.
Very true and well put but lots of people can read well and are still idiots. Idiots come from ideology and influences around them or what they read. You can read the wrong books and believe them. Look at religion. But I get what you mean.
Absolutely! But the higher our literacy is, the more likely we are to discern what's propaganda and what isn't.
Look to religion as well, I guarantee they don't read their religious text, and even if they did, they probably don't understand it because of poor literacy.
Just because they don't read carefully does not make them stupid. The reading comprehension issue is a direct result of two things that have happened in US education. First is mainstreaming which I first became aware of in the early sixties. The second is school vouchers where people with money
can use money I paid in taxes to remove money from the public school budget and put it into a private school. The quick fix for that would be to require any school accepting a voucher to comply with all requirements imposed on the public school. Sadly, working people cannot take advantage
Reading comprehension has a direct correlation with intelligence & the ability to discern information that is based on propaganda.
Schools have moved away from phonics and focused on sight words. Our education system has been assaulted for over 50 years, causing a serious decline in intelligence
I am sure you know this but for the benefit of anyone else, ""intelligence" refers to a broader cognitive ability encompassing various mental skills like reasoning, problem-solving, and learning, while
"reading comprehension" specifically refers to the ability to understand the meaning of written text, which is just one aspect of intelligence and relies on skills like vocabulary, decoding, and inference making; essentially, intelligence is a broader concept that includes reading comprehension
No argument with anything you say. Nothing has, in my opinion, worked as well as phonics. Why did we move away from it? When my kids had trouble I taught them how to sound out words. Intelligence and reading comprehension should correlate. One can however be intelligent and not be able to read.

Literacy helps develop reasoning, planning, problem solving, thinking abstractly, understanding complex ideas, and critical thinking.
Those skills then translate to other areas of intelligence
