Is there a starter pack for American history and government professors? I need some serious “you think this has never happened before but it has” perspective please.

follow Heather Cox Richardson on Substack, she's a great historian who ties together today with yesterday
there is also James Fell, the Sweary historian, who has two great books out, and there is also a book called Black AF History by a Black historian Michael Harriot that is a real eyeopener.
And yet, in the USA this has never happened before. When it came close, FDR and friends beat it down. This time, the fascists have won and they know it. What will we do about it?
Consider @timothysnyder.bsky.social . I believe his area is the rise of authoritarian governments in 20th century Europe, and most people know him as the author of On Tyranny.
Just read his latest On Freedom, and it's critical context for how we don't even conceptualize what freedom means the same as authoritarian-sympathisers.
I’m not a professor, but Puerto Rico has always endured inconsistent application of the U.S. Constitution—sometimes it is upheld, while at other times, it is not due to their ambiguous commonwealth status. It’s actually a research paper I’m currently writing for my msw class :)
I was just about to say this. It’s not necessarily comparable to anything in American history, but it has happened in German history. (Only a hundred years ago too!)
Shoot. Just go to the library and get history books from grade school. I can remember plenty of studies about previous countries and governments that had problems with dictators and cults of personality. I was screaming about what TrAmp could be back in 2015. but no...
There's been plenty of stupidness in our history. The Gilded Age had a ton of government corruption/monopolies/abuse of power. The time prior to the civil war was a very tense and polarized time. One of the main issues of our time is fake stuff on the internet.
The checks a balances envisioned by the constitution have been eroded. I’d really welcome some insight from the academic community on how the 2024 election has enabled authoritarianism
It’s a big subject. Throughout the relatively short history of the US there have been authoritarian figures. Washington, Adams, Lincoln and others are examples. The limits on their power were enshrined in the constitution, the separation of powers, the judiciary and the state structure. 🧵
Robber barons were wealthy industrialists and financiers in the 19th century who were known for their ruthless business practices. The term was often used during the Gilded Age to describe their unethical practices, which included exploiting workers, the environment, and governmental practices.
No dunking here. But this has not happened before because the device you typed that on and the one I’m typing on have existed in the capacity for less than 20 years.
I think society’s Wall-E factor must have a seat on the discussion of any similar historical American government arrangements
I recall gifting my cousin copies of Indigenous Continent: The Epic Contest for North America by Pekka Hamalainen and The American Slave Coast: A History of the Slave-Breeding Industry by Ned Sublette and Constance Sublette. There are common themes to these two overlapping histories.
There's this scene where Mehmet II is walking through what's left of Constantinople, after the walls fell ,and reciting a poem.
"Spiders weave the curtains in the palace of the Ceasars.
The owl calls the watches in the Towers of Afrasanab."
I am blown away at how little people know about WWII, yahtzee Germany, and fascism. I guess I was just really fortunate to have Jewish history and literature teachers during my formative years. I get that not everyone is so lucky 😏
Howdy, there! I'm a historian and professor. My work revolves around race and politics in the US, and my first book will discuss radical resistance to law-and-order policing in twentieth-century Los Angeles.

No it’s never EVER happened before. It’s like the hurricane, flood, fire and lightning strikes all happening at once. 😣😣😣😣
