I think it boils down to the lack of critical thinking in any field in which people aren’t experts.
It’s easy to accept a simple but wrong opinion if the truth is shades of grey.
I read recently that one of the Scandinavian countries is introducing courses in critical analysis. That would help.

Ya, there absolutely is and it's been growing steadily for over a decade now. Even refuting antivaxxers in the early 2010s was a pita. They just didn't really want to take the time and LEARN something new. 🙄
