Mitsuru Kirijo, Persona 3 Reload. A tragic backstory. A mysterious personality. The weight of the world on her shoulders. A fierce friend. Mitsuru's personal growth in some of the best ever seen in a game--and her friendship with Yukari is superb.
How do you pick from a stellar cast? As a parent, Heismay's story struck a deeply emotional chord, elevating him to one of the best thieves and all-around characters in a game this year.
Lore expansion (or dilution) helped and hindered characters in Rebirth. The devs cooked with Tifa, though. The best development. The best moments. Her humanity shines, and her vulnerability is deeply endearing. She grounds the entire cast. Well done, SE.
Shadowheart, Baldur's Gate 3.
I love when a character grows and opens up as a narrative progresses. SH is a prime example. I did not like her at first, but she's far more than meets the eye. The emotional and moral arc of her particularly story made me fall in love.
Ok, so maybe he/they don't have a lot of character growth. Astro Bot was cute as fuck. Fun. Iconic, even.
I hope we get to see more adventures with this little bot in the future.
