Aaron Bushnell was a conscientious young man. He grew up in a religious community and joined our military, could not sit by and watch as our military weapons were used against people not responsible for the Oct. 7 attack. He knew belonging to an organization meant his complicity.

The loss of this human life is deeply sad. The history of self-immolation protests is dark & also complicated by state narratives.

In 2001, public opinion abhorred this style of protest so much that a popular modern Buddhist movement went from having UN human rights support to being labeled a cult.

I have no challenge to that account. The act itself has a dubious history and demands historical and media literacy, and often has been used by governments against the causes of who commit it.
I don't place any judgement on Aaron's life or choices. He deserves to be remembered well.
