Fucking fuck Google to the fucking moon and back. I searched for a Scientific American article and got an AI summary that had an error in almost every single sentence, starting with the date being off by a decade.

Please share if you ever get a reply back. I HATE that the AI response is the first thing I see even if I’m looking for an EPA regulation. And don’t get me started on the energy suckers AI requires. We are all going to have higher electric bills.
Ugh. I'm curious if you could send me the search terms you used. I'm curious what I'd come up with in Canada. AFAIK we don't have that Google AI nonsense here yet.
Yeah, the article date in the ai summary isn't wrong, it's just using an older article on the same topic. Still garbage, searcher would generally want the more up-to-date info
Was anybody talking about the energy? I thought we were talking about the output not being helpful. OP was looking for a recent article and the AI gave a summary of an article from 10 years ago. Or is this just bad response threading?
Google once worked hard to demote web pages with gibberish and spam. Now the company is actively polluting the internet with garbage. Sadly, many people will just assume that what Google AI spits out is accurate.
I thought Google turned these off because they were so bad and providing accurate information. However, it seems they are just disabled in New Zealand. When will this madness end? 🤦🏻♂️
Tell us how you really feel. 🤣DuckDuckGo go for the win, it’s in iphone preferences: switched a couple years ago never looked back. Google is the worst search engine.
Top 4 results were SA.
I am the type to make excuses for Google (They've mostly been an influence for good on the interenet imo), but they've lost their way pretty badly by now and I hate it. I just ignore their Gemini BS and use it.
DDG doesn't automatically insert AI into a search, meaning the energy cost is significantly lower and idk about you, but I prefer being less tracked. I also like there to be options for search.
I used Google the other day for something VERY easy and mundane (I wanted to know the amount of fiber in half an avocado), and the AI answer was ridiculously off.
Because it's not actually intelligent, artificial or otherwise.
It just takes data, rearranges it, and spits it back out.
It doesn't understand that words are concepts symbolized.
It's incapable of thinking conceptually, or thinking at all.
It's just a large language model.
I get the broad strokes of what AI is and is not, I'm just curious as to how something that has been literally designed to chew up data and spit it back out gets something as simple as a *single number* wrong
it's emblematic of AI's general inability to do what's been promised
Because it doesn't understand what a question is or what an answer is and even the simplest fucking thing can confuse it. Useless tech outside situations where it has perfect information and just needs to crunch numbers quicker than a human can.
I got a confident but completely erroneous result about a drug interaction today which I thankfully knew enough to ignore, but I am waiting for this bullshit to kill someone.
I mean, for sure fuck the shitty make AI, but like, Google was never a SOURCE of information. It was always directory of sources that you had to vet yourself.
The issue is the level of misinformation generated by AI. Not everyone has the same filter - that’s how we got Brexit, Trump and the recent riots in the UK.
I googled a simple statistic, and it was 5 times harder than in the past because I had to sift through AI trash to finally find results from legitimate research sites. They suppress results that used to show up first, and have AI there--which is WRONG most of the time.
One of the things about CEOs automatically becoming plutocrats is that they just cannot possibly be using the products they’re foisting on the public in any meaningful way.
I’ve also switched from Safari to the DuckDuckGo browser for most of my browsing. It’s really good at blocking trackers, and places like Salon are actually readable now!
Yeah DDG had an AI function too for a minute but I was able to turn it off (I can’t remember how now, only they were like “do you want to turn this off? Here’s how”)
If you put -ai at the end of your google search you don’t get the terrible summary. That said, I have mostly switched to duckduckgo because it has given me better results overall.
Ah yes, thank you for the reminder. But it's still aggravating that you have to take this route, as opposed to Google simply implementing a toggle button that says, "don't shove LLM crap down my throat."
I'm not sure what that refers to but it doesn't appear to be regular web searches. It's not enabled on my phone, but generally when I search for something through the Android app, I get an AI Overview anyway.
A little tricky I discovered - Google search avoids the AI summary if you include the name of a celebrity in the query - even if you "not" it with the minus sign.
So they want to make sure you get real information (or at least, not hallucinations) about celebrities, but queries about science and health can just give you nonsense and it's fine?
It sucks so so so much. I have been using it with the AI search OFF and it has *changed my life*, as in changed it sort of back to what it was before in terms of search results.
I notice a lot of folks mentioning they use duckduckgo. It's better than google, for sure. But try kagisearch at least once. It's free for the first 100 searches and then a small fee. NO ADS. SUPER FAST. Excellent search results. It requires an account to login but you can use a fake/alias.
These are truly, truly awful. I've found mistakes in more than half of the entries I've bothered to glance at -- and those are just the things I immediately recognized as being incorrect.
What do we have to do to make google get rid of this feature that absolutely no one wants and that makes its product significantly worse while gobbling energy
Google probably: “we grow board of dominating the internet and being a force for good so, we’re going to burn a trillion dollars and the planet to make it unusable just because we can.”
I once asked Google AI to write a summary of my own online presence. It was 90 percent fictitious nonsense, I responded "Why are you making shit up and putting it in the summary?" It responded with an apology and said that it would try to do better. Explicitly tell it to be truthful.
I've used Google since it was first publicly available — I remember telling people to try it! — and its usefulness and effectiveness has been consistently degraded: it was originally an Internet search engine with a powerful query language and now it's just ChatGPT with targeted ads.
I couldn’t get it to give me the dates of the 2024 High Holy Days yesterday. AI summary was for 2023, and the links were to things like the Wikipedia article on them as a concept.
I'm getting these kind of results constantly now. I search for canada post letter mail rates and it serves up outdated and wrong content from 3rd parties instead of the canada post website with accurate and current info
Unfortunately a lot of people who don't understand AI think that those search returns are an objective truth... because they trust Google search. I've found this is particularly so for Seniors and younger children. This worries me, and should worry Google.
Had the same issue this week. Looking for contraindication for FILs condition and Ozempic. All these made up sentences that a non AI wary scientist would have taken as fact. Its gonna kill people

(Now if only I could get it to default to "Web." And also, return the excellently relevant results that it once did. 😄 Also also, I'd like a pony.)
Once it’s built, it can be used easily on lower power machines.
Write me a poem about how much LLMs are destroying our planet even faster.
Been Duck Duck going for a week when I realized I couldn’t turn the AI off.
Top 4 results were SA.
How.
It just takes data, rearranges it, and spits it back out.
It doesn't understand that words are concepts symbolized.
It's incapable of thinking conceptually, or thinking at all.
It's just a large language model.
it's emblematic of AI's general inability to do what's been promised
It is absolutely not that.

It'll do a google search and strip out the AI. I've set it as my homepage.

Or you can do as I did and switch to Kagi (paid search)

For example:
Nonsense is fine as long as it's not libellous nonsense.

Yeah, this is going well...
and got this result. So. Much. Better.

Maps all paid place markers, hard to find searched locations.
Android only since the start. Don't want to switch, but next phone will be iPhone to escape ai crap.
Switched primary email back to yahoo even.
Now I rarely go back to Google.
Are you sure you’re not English?))
AI -free Google search ❤️

Yeah, I guess that would make it kind of personal.

The answer was top of the page last year.
