I think Will is basically right, but that there’s something about an economic and global empire that maybe isn’t crumbling but is definitely showing some signs of real stress going on too. This much global and domestic inequality combined with other polycrises is not a healthy baseline reality.

The reason the growing dominance of social media in our communication is causing a global shift towards fascism, xenophobia, and conspiracism is because it’s an information space where:
-the most visible ideas are viral ones
-the most viral ideas are the most shocking
-nothing has to be true
