Nurses are the absolute backbone of medical care. My mom was a nurse running an ambulatory unit in a rough part of Brooklyn for 20 years. After she died, people told me SHE was the one who gave them information, cared for them, soothed them, noted problems before MDs. And she laughed...
...at the coffee mug or tote bag (likely from China!) she and her staff got during Nurses Week.
To all nurses everywhere: You are everything within the medical system. YOU also make it a human system. You are rockstars and I truly love you all. β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
my mom was a nurse long before i was born. this is how she met my dad when he was having his appendix removed. her compassion for others was always self-evident. I learned a lot about compassion and respect from her. i miss you mom.
If I were ever thrown on a stage and asked to cry, I would think of the curse who rubbed my back after gallbladder surgery as I was sick and said "poor poor thing, you've been through so much. When you're ready, I'm going to get you some ginger ale."
I know nurses, and what they do, is so much more than that moment. I know nothing in that moment was indicative of their (your, her) technical or medical knowledge, but I desperately needed for a moment to have someone see that I'd had a rough several weeks.
Nurses also observed that my mother was weaker and less coordinated on one side more than the other when her heart surgeon insisted she was choosing not to walk or cooperate out of mental illness, spite, or laziness.
