This is why the idea (advanced by Robert Sapolsky, for example) that in any given scenario our behavior is somehow fully determined *in advance* is so nonsensical.

If the present is only determined as it happens, whether that creates space for free will or only an illusion of it remains a matter of perspective. But even if free will scepticism is pretty much destined to be the minority view, I feel it can be a good one to have around. @greggdcaruso.bsky.social

I agree with most of your Undetermined essay, Kevin - although ending up on an opposing side! Personal and collective moral responsibility seems to me an existential question we face with no final answer. From my perspective, questions of moral "desert" may even be somewhat in conflict with that.

There are obviously loads of important questions - philosophical and pragmatic - about moral responsibility and desert. My argument is simply not to foreclose those discussions based on dubious metaphysical positions on free will.

(Maybe it's a many-sided argument, where the moral agent-patient relationship is more dynamic, dimensional and disturbing, @davidgunkel.bsky.social. Perhaps one of those problems @ceperez.bsky.social mentions without a prescribable solution - although I expect the possibilities aren't "limitless".)

I wouldn't particularly go with his choice of examples, including Go, but I suppose it ends up the about the same. Evolution has to work like that, and - naturally! - has evolved reasoning animals trying to make sense of the complexity evolution throws at them and they throw into their own future.
